Summary :

The Manager, Hospital Coding provides administrative and operations management of the workflow and productivity for hospital health record coding, abstracting functions, clinical pertinence review, Diagnosis Related Group (DRG), and Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) assignment and validation. Ensures the quality of service by maintaining current knowledge of coding and DRG grouping, quality initiatives, data collection and reporting, inpatient coding systems, and federal compliance requirements. Effectively communicates information to department team members and other affected hospital departments. Manages daily operations of the assigned area including administrative, fiscal, and clinical/technical activities to ensure high quality health care services.

Job Description:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

* Effectively manages team members in a manner consistent with ThedaCare policies and values. Ensures the recruitment and retention of competent team members to meet the needs of the business operations of the department.

* Is accountable for daily activities and work processes that result in quality outcomes.

* Oversees and ensures accuracy of time and attendance and payroll practices.

* Evaluates and determines the integrity of coding controls and revenue generation is maintained at the highest possible level.

* Manages the coding and abstracting of patient encounters and conducts internal coding audits for accuracy.

* Is responsible for the timely completion of coding, data/charge entry, and abstracting required in the revenue cycle process.

* Establishes, implements, and maintains a formalized review process for coding compliance including a formal review (audit) process.

* Designs and uses audit tools to monitor the accuracy of clinical coding.

* Develops performance expectations, and coaches, evaluates, and motivates team members. Investigates complaints and performance concerns.

* Stays abreast of regulatory requirements to ensure appropriate development of policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Associates Degree; Bachelor's degree (preferred)

* Five years of progressive responsibility in hospital coding

* Three years of leadership experience to include leading teams and/or projects and/or 5 years of coding experience

* Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification, or Certified Coding Specialist

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

* Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance

* Job classification is not exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

* Normally works in climate controlled office environment

* Frequent sitting with movement throughout office space

* Use of computers throughout the work day

* Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers
